Scientists Discovering
the Way Our World Works!

Hand in Hand
Our theme this year is "Hand in Hand".
We will work collaboratively to share knowledge, encouragement, and our strengths to become a community of successful scientists.
Together we will work hand in hand to expand our knowledge!

 Physical Science (6th Grade):

Physical science covers many topics of science.  In the beginning of the year the students will be learning about lab safety and the different pieces of equipment they will see in the labs.  The  students will also learn about the scientific method and scientific note taking.  The students will learn about the periodic table.  They will spend a lot of time on the periodic table learning about the different elements and their properties, atoms and their structures, states of matter, properties of matter, and chemical reactions.  Other topics that students will learn about are: forces and motion, energy forms, sources and properties of energy, and circuit design.  The students will end the year working with the  Electrical Energy and Circuit Design Einstein kit.

Life Science (7th Grade):

Life science has the students exploring organisms.  The students will begin with a review of lab safety and equipment, the scientific method, and scientific note taking.  The students will begin the year looking at the simplest structure, the cell.  The students will then start by learning about plants while the weather allows them to go outside and work with the plants before it gets too cold.  The students will then focus animals for the remainder of the semester.  The students will be learning about taxonomy and the classification of these organisms.  This year we have the opportunity to use the Organisms from Macro to Micro Einstein kit.  During 2nd semester the students will be looking at live organisms, growing plants and butterflies, and conducting hands-on labs to understand organisms that are much smaller than they are.

Earth Science (8th Grade):

 Earth science begins
with a review of lab safety and equipment, the scientific method, and scientific note taking.  The students will be responsible for taking off the burlap on the trees at Legion Park (the burlap was placed on the trees to capture gypsy moths).  The students will begin the semester working with the Earth in Space Einstein kit.  The students will begin by looking into the information that they know about Earth and their solar system.  As they work through the Einstein kit the students will go over their answers and discussing what they have learned.  The students will be learning about the Earth, the processes of the Earth, the moon, and the solar system.  Second semester the students will be focusing on the following topics:  rocks, minerals, weathering and erosion, catastrophic events (plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes), oceans and weather.  The students always end the year creating water rockets that they shoot off at Legion Park!
